AVIEW NOMAD GALLERY in collaboration with Y-Gallery are the hosting galleries for CityArtLab Minsk, December 2011.
CityArtLabs intention is to explore whether artistic interventions and social art practice can transform, disrupt or subvert current environmental, urban, political and social conditions in critical ways. A crucial question is how can such interventions propose ideas, while at the same time act with integrity and respect to local communities and convey a multitude of voices in local history, culture and urban/rural contexts.
A temporary art collective is formed and will work with negotiations of public space with the gallery as studio, CityArtLab was initiated in 2011 by Swedish artist & Curator Anna Viola Hallberg. It was originally carried out in the city of Mariestad, for the month of December the collective will have Minsk as its base and artists from Belarus, Russia and Sweden will work side by side with the general public with art practice that is socially based focusing on sustainable aspects of life in Minsk. The gallery will function as a platform and meeting ground for the production and exchange of different forms of knowledge.
Carolina Falkholt (SE), Irina Anufrieva (SE/BY), Vita Dumchyute (RU), Mary/Marsha Khrustaleva (BY) are the main artists as Y-Gallery becomes their collective studio. During one month they invite the local art and activist scene to become part of the city exploration.
The project is supported by Swedish Institute
The opening is set to November 30th 2011 with a public reception on December 5th.
